Small Business Roundup – February 2026

Newsletter Feb2026

My thanks for the hundreds of messages of support I received since being formally appointed tothe role earlier this month. I am looking forward to continuing to work with the QSBC team and with stakeholders across industry and all tiers of government to improve the operating environment and make Queensland the best place for small and family businesses to start, grow and stay.

Since stepping into this role, it has been a pleasure to meet with a range of stakeholders and I look forward to continuing to engage with you to identify and implement opportunities for a targeted approach to reducing red tape and ensuring regulation is considerate of, and right sized for, small businesses.  We know that compliance is taking time and energy away from running and growing small businesses and that well-intentioned initiatives and regulation can inadvertently add complexity and reduce the ability for small businesses to focus on serving customers, employing staff, and growing sustainably.

The Queensland Government has a range of programs to support small business, including Round 2 of the Secure Communities Partnership Program to deter crime against small and family businesses, creating safer and more vibrant business areas.  Along with support from the new Queensland Government Apprenticeships Deliver campaign, including the $19 million Small Business Apprenticeship Pilot Program, supporting small and family construction businesses, these are practical changes that can help small businesses invest in the workforce of tomorrow, while helping manage cash flow and productivity.

Whilst this is positive news, the reality is that some small businesses are experiencing pressure from factors like inflation, energy prices, insurance, and wage increases. For businesses carrying debt or working with tight margins, even small increases can affect cash flow and confidence. However, there are practical steps that can help steady the ship. Conducting a finance health check and reviewing expenses regularly can help you spot pressure points early; while reviewing and renegotiating supplier contracts can help with rising operating costs. Small actions like these can help you feel more prepared, whatever the months ahead may bring.

If you need help with your business, you can access online support at Business Queensland. If you need help resolving an issue with your small business lease, or for general enquiries and to seek information or support before applying for dispute assistance or low-cost mediation, give our team a call on 1300 312 344.

Looking ahead, 8 March 2026 marks International Women’s Day, and from 8–14 March we celebrate Queensland Women’s Week, a chance to recognise the leadership, skills, and economic contribution of women in business. Check out the events or host your own and list it on the Queensland Government Events Calendar.

Let’s celebrate the women who make our small business community stronger and keep supporting their success every day.

Acting Small Business Commissioner
