Small Business Roundup – March 2026

QSBC newsletter header for web_March 2026

As we move further into 2026, I want to acknowledge what many small businesses across Queensland are experiencing. While many are thriving, I recognise that the year has started with its share of pressures, including high living costs, elevated cash rates and persistent inflation. Added to this are the impact of current global uncertainties and the ongoing recovery in several regions from recent severe weather events.

Flooding events earlier this year have affected communities and businesses across Wide Bay-Burnett, Central, Western, and Far North Queensland. Recovery can take time, but support is available. Joint Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements have been activated, offering grants, concessional loans and hardship assistance. If your business or primary production has been affected, I strongly encourage you to explore what is on offer and reach out for guidance.

Despite these challenges, I’m continually inspired by the resilience and determination of Queensland’s small business community. This was evident at the recent Queensland Retail Conference and in conversations with industry and local leaders across the state. In March, I also visited Gracemere, Rockhampton and Yeppoon, attending events and meetings to hear firsthand what is happening on the ground. Your insights and feedback are invaluable in shaping our work and ensuring your voice is heard where it matters most.

Our team is working hard on your behalf. We are engaging in government and industry planning, reviews and inquiries on issues like insurance for small businesses and the visitor economy, as well as advocating for improvements to retail shop leasing. We also continue to support businesses directly, if you are facing a dispute involving your business—whether it is a leaking roof in a commercial lease, air-conditioning and maintenance, mould, rent increase or bond return or other business-to-business challenges, we are here to help you find your way forward.

Looking ahead, Queensland Small Business Month in May is a chance to connect, learn and celebrate what small businesses bring to our state. I encourage you to attend events, join the conversation, and invest in your networks. It is also worth considering joining an industry group or local chamber of commerce. These networks do more than just provide advice—they offer connection, practical support, and the chance to share experiences with people who understand exactly what you face. They can open doors, spark ideas, and give you confidence to tackle challenges and discover opportunities to help your business grow. Keep an eye out for events in your area.

By staying connected, accessing support, and exploring new opportunities, you are building a stronger, more resilient business. Queensland’s small business community is full of innovation, determination, and creativity—and I am confident that, together, we can continue to grow, adapt, and stay. There is so much to learn, share, and celebrate—and I hope this newsletter inspires you to take the next step, connect with others, and make the most of the opportunities ahead.
